“Natural Flavors” Might Not Be as Natural—Or Safe—As You Think.
Despite the wholesome label, “natural flavors” often contain highly processed chemical mixtures derived from plants or animals, but with little nutritional value. The FDA doesn’t require full transparency, allowing manufacturers to include allergens, preservatives like sodium benzoate (which can form carcinogenic benzene), or compounds like carrageenan—linked to digestive inflammation—all under the vague umbrella of “natural.”
These additives can combine into what researchers call “chemical cocktails,” with unknown long-term effects. And while consumers associate “natural” with healthy, many of these ingredients are no better than synthetic ones—and may even carry hidden risks.
To reduce your exposure, avoid products with vague ingredient labels and focus on whole, unprocessed foods made from recognizable ingredients.
