That “Fresh” Car Smell Could Be Harming Your Health.
New research reveals that car air fresheners—especially tree-shaped ones like Little Trees—emit dangerous chemicals such as VOCs and phthalates, which have been linked to respiratory issues, hormone disruption, reproductive problems, and even cancer. In a confined space like a car, exposure can be intense and long-lasting.
These air fresheners release compounds like d-limonene and beta-pinene, which may trigger asthma, skin allergies, and migraines. Worse, most don’t list harmful ingredients, leaving consumers unaware. One study found phthalates in 86% of tested air fresheners, including “natural” brands. With limited regulation, there’s little oversight on what you’re breathing in—especially troubling for kids, pregnant women, and anyone with allergies or chronic conditions.
TLDR; Skip synthetic air fresheners.
