Gluten Sensitivity Might Be Hiding Behind Your Skin Problems.
A recent EMJ Dermatology review shows that even without celiac disease or positive blood tests, non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) can still cause persistent skin issues like dermatitis herpetiformis, eczema, urticaria, psoriasis, and chronic rashes—symptoms that often improve after adopting a gluten-free diet.
Dermatitis herpetiformis—a blistering, intensely itchy rash—is the classic skin sign of gluten intolerance, confirmed via immunofluorescence. But the review highlights that other chronic dermatoses, such as eczema or psoriasis, may also be triggered by gluten in sensitive individuals. In many cases, removing gluten led to significant relief, even without gastrointestinal symptoms or abnormal serology.
Struggling with unexplained, persistent skin issues? Try a short elimination of gluten—you may discover it’s the hidden trigger behind your dermatitis or psoriasis.
